Top Tips on Speech Topics!

Interested in joining Toastmasters but not sure how to decide on your speech topic? Here are some top tips from our VP Education shared during this week’s meeting.

Four Ideas for Inspiration

  1. A good place to start is rooting through your hobbies, past and present. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? This doesn’t have to be a high octane story, it can  be anything – reading, sewing, running, cricket – or dare devil adventures if that is what you do in your spare time!
  2. Reflect on your experience; what moments have provided pause for thought or insight? A delayed flight, a holiday with an unexpected turn of events, a personal goal that you achieved, or didn’t.
  3. Share an opinion; this could be based on what you’ve read in the news, or it could be a quote from someone, or a discussion you had with friend or family about a topic and various perspectives were shared
  4. What are you passionate about? This could be a hobby but it could also be something that you love to read about, it could be your family life, animals or the environment

And one bonus tip!

  • Keep a list of your ideas! Don’t trust that when you get out of the bath, back from a walk, finish the dinner that you will remember your brilliant idea. Instead, grab your phone, laptop or pen and paper and write it down asap!

Table Topics: New Beginnings

To demonstrate the power of a good quote to get us talking, our Table Topics Master invited us to share our thoughts and reactions to various quotes relating to change, which brought out a number of personal stories across work, home and beliefs.

‘Every moment is a fresh beginning.’ (T.S. Elliot). Could this moment be your fresh beginning as a toast master? Join us for our next meeting on Monday 28th October, either just to have a cup of tea and chat, or to take straight to the stage and tell us your story!
