Lucky or unlucky 13?

It was April the 13th when we had our last meeting. We decided to go with the theme of Lucky 13, instead of the ‘unlucky 13’ that we are inclined to believe in. As the toastmaster for the evening, Rumana highlighted how 13 April is often a time for a new year celebration in many parts of Asia and how the number 13 is seen as lucky and positive in America.

We started with two excellent speeches delivered by Simon and Amardeep. Amardeep introduced himself to the club and gave us a cultural insight into his long South Indian name. Simon amused us by impersonating his mentors and how he learned from them.

We then had thought-provoking table topics, by our table topics master Mike. They were about our superstitions, our luck in winning or losing a horse race, and making the best use of a trip that was unplanned. They were all very entertaining and helped us to know each other more. The best table topic award went to Simon for sharing his superstitions. Yes, our ‘superstitious Simon’ often salutes the magpies. Don’t ask me why!

In the end, Amanda broke our superstitious beliefs and brought us back to reality by giving constructive and encouraging feedback to Amardeep. So, she was voted as the best evaluator.

We did have a lucky 13 evening, unraveling all our bad lucks into good ones.

Who knows, you might be lucky to win an award too if you keep on trying!

Our next meeting will be on the 27th of April, online via zoom. 7:00 PM for a 7:15 start.

Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Rumana
